Job Title: Mechanical Engineering Intern – Medical Device Design & Thermal Management
Location: Pittsburgh, PA
Position Description
EV2 Technologies is seeking a motivated engineering intern to support the design and development of an active cooling system for a thermal balloon catheter. Working alongside EV2 engineers, the intern will contribute to system conceptualization, mechanical design, computational fluid dynamics (CFD), and thermal and electrical simulations. The project will also involve prototype fabrication, experimental testing, and integration of the cooling system into the catheter system. This internship offers hands-on experience in medical device engineering, with an emphasis on thermal management, simulation-driven design, prototyping, and system integration.
Responsibilities
Assist in the conceptual design and development of an active cooling system for a thermal balloon catheter.
Develop and evaluate mechanical designs to assess system feasibility and performance.
Perform computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analyses and thermal simulations to guide design decisions and optimize cooling performance.
Conduct electrical and thermal analyses, as applicable, to support cooling system design and integration.
Fabricate prototypes and conduct bench testing to evaluate system performance against defined engineering requirements.
Integrate the cooling system into the catheter assembly and assist with troubleshooting and design refinement.
Document design iterations, simulation results, experimental findings, and technical recommendations.
Qualifications
Currently pursuing a B.S. or M.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline; senior undergraduate and graduate students are encouraged to apply.
Experience with mechanical design and computer-aided design (CAD) tools.
Familiarity with computational fluid dynamics (CFD), heat transfer, or thermal system modeling.
Hands-on experience with prototyping, fabrication, or experimental testing.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret simulation and experimental results.
Strong organizational, technical documentation, and communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with thermal management, fluid mechanics, or heat transfer applications.
Familiarity with electrical-thermal system integration or electromechanical systems.
Experience with engineering simulation tools for CFD, thermal analysis, or multiphysics modeling.
Interest in medical device development, catheter-based technologies, or biomedical engineering.
Compensation
This is a paid internship. Compensation will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
