Job Title: Product Development Engineer
Location: Pittsburgh, PA, United States
Employment Type: Full-Time
Job Description
We are seeking a Product Development Engineer to contribute to the development of a novel polymer-based scaffold technology, with a primary focus on scaffold fabrication process development and optimization. This role will involve developing and refining fabrication methods, establishing reproducible manufacturing processes, characterizing scaffold properties, conducting in vitro testing, and supporting preclinical studies. The engineer will develop and execute experiments, troubleshoot fabrication and process-related challenges, analyze results, and document development activities. The position requires a hands-on approach to engineering, practical problem-solving skills, and the ability to work across disciplines to advance the technology from early-stage prototypes toward reproducible manufacturing and preclinical evaluation.
Responsibilities
Develop, evaluate, and optimize fabrication processes for polymer-based scaffolds, including the evaluation and selection of biofabrication and polymer-processing techniques, to achieve desired scaffold quality and performance, process reproducibility, and manufacturing scalability.
Characterize scaffold materials and structures to evaluate relevant physical, structural, and functional properties and inform fabrication process optimization.
Plan and conduct in vitro studies to evaluate scaffold performance, analyze experimental data, and document results to support product development.
Establish and maintain scaffold fabrication protocols, manufacturing procedures, and experimental methods, and document process development activities and results.
Support the planning, execution, and documentation of preclinical studies in collaboration with university research partners, including sample preparation and processing, study activities, and data analysis.
Communicate experimental findings, technical challenges, and recommendations related to fabrication processes and scaffold performance to the project team and company leadership.
Required Qualifications
Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering, Bioengineering, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field; or M.S. in a related field with 2+ years of relevant experience; or B.S. in a related field with 3+ years of relevant experience.
Knowledge of or experience with manufacturing process development, materials processing, or laboratory-scale fabrication.
Experience designing and conducting experiments, analyzing data, troubleshooting technical challenges, and interpreting experimental results.
Ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and collaborate effectively in a multidisciplinary environment.
Strong organizational, technical documentation, and written and verbal communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience developing and optimizing fabrication processes for polymer-based scaffolds or biomaterials, including techniques such as spin casting, 3D printing, electrospinning, or other biofabrication and polymer-processing methods.
Experience with mechanical characterization and/or in vitro biological testing of biomaterials or scaffolds.
Familiarity with applicable ASTM and ISO standards and test methods relevant to biomaterials or medical devices.
Experience collaborating with academic research laboratories, core facilities, or external research partners on experimental studies or preclinical evaluations.
Compensation and Benefits
Annual base salary: $90,000–$106,000, depending on qualifications and relevant experience.
Medical, dental, and vision insurance.
401(k) retirement plan with employer contributions, subject to plan terms.
